180 A very rare and original 1958 Poole Harbour General Post office poster.
This delightful image of Poole Harbour looks across the water to the old customs house and shows the legendary Poole Harbour postman Harry Reeves.
Harry is the main focus in the painting. He was responsible for delivering local mail from December 1937 and then a little later from his Harbour motor boat called the “Kittywake” which would take him a full 16 Miles around the islands to deliver mail and parcels right up to the mid 1960s.
The artist chosen by the Post Office to record his time employed was David Charles Cobb born in Kent 1921-2014. He was a very respected marine artist and also produced several posters for British Railway companies. He served as President of The Royal Society of Marine artists. A well established artist who moved with his wife to Brockenhurst in 1950.
This original Poole poster is numbered GPO (general post office) PRD (public relations department) 1016.
According to the official archivist at the GPO they say this is the only print known to exist and have suggested this may have been a trial print and never released.
This makes it an exceptional investment and a real prize to own.
